Wilton House

The Wilton House is almost 500 yrs old and lies on the grounds of a Priory established by King Egbert in the 8thC. Around 871AD it became a nunnery founded by King Alfred. The nunnery was replaced by Benedictine Abbey in the 12C. By 1500 the house was becoming moderate and abandoned so the property was dissolved by King Henry III. In 1542 he gave this land to William Herbert and it has remained in the family since that time.
Many scenes from movies have been filmed at the Wilton house such as scenes from Sense and Sensibility and Pride & Prejudice
The Palladian style influenced by the Italian Renaissance can be seen on the S. Facade but instead uses principals of isolation and space. There is also the Palladian Bridge which is a mimic of Palladio's Rialto Bridge that is across the Grand Canal in Venice.
There are many other significant influences in the art and architecture of the Wilton House that can be experienced through tours, weddings, corporate events and seen in movies.
