Fontainebleau

Fontainebleau was created by Francis I with the help of architect Gilles le Breton who erected many of the buildings on this site. Also invited to France by the king were the architect Sebastiano Serlio and Leonardo da Vinci.
After Francis I, Henry II and Catherine de Medici took over the palace in the 16th century. They commissioned architects and interior decorators who introduced the Italian Mannerist style to France. The architecture and decoration has elements from the 16th to 19th century.

Benvenuto Cellini's "Nymph of Fontainebleau " was commissioned for Fontainebleau but now is at the Louvre.

Many royalty have resided since in the Palace but now the beautiful art and architecture are open to be viewed by the public.
